Pause on Student Visa Interviews at US Consulates Overseas

On May 27, 2025 instructions were sent to US Consulates overseas to pause scheduling further student (as well as J and M visa) interviews until new interview guidance is distributed.  These visa categories allow foreign students and exchange visitors to come to U.S. institutions for their studies, work, and training. This pause is expected to be temporary and to be lifted as soon as the US Department of State develops new social media vetting guidance. Please note that while this pause is in effect, visa interviews previously scheduled will continue, and new applicants should continue to complete applications seeking interviews.  Applicants with valid visas in these categories may also continue international travel during the pause.

If you are preparing for your visa appointment, the American Immigration Council recommends:

  • Please review your social media accounts. Keep one or two accounts active. Deleting them all will likely result in a denial as a consular officer will conclude the applicant closed them to hide adverse information.

  • Remove postings which criticize the current U.S. administration, its foreign policy, and cultural values the administration promotes, or show behaviors that may be considered inappropriate, such as partying, drug or alcohol use.

  • Add postings about being excited to experience America during your work and/or training.

Be patient. It may take longer than usual for the vetting to occur.
